The National Theatre of the Deaf, launched in 1967, is 50 years old. Its founding represented a collaboration between government officials, theater professionals, and talented Deaf actors and actresses. It made history on several counts—being the first theater company to perform in all 50 states and all 7 continents, including Antarctica. The NTD also inspired the founding of numerous regional/local Deaf-thearer companies, most of which have, sadly, disbanded. But its innovative work in American Sign Language as a dramatic medium continues. The NTD, in the form of LTD, carries on.
