The California School for the Deaf started in 1859 as a small-scale civic venture by a group of concerned, highly motivated San Franciscans. The school soon obtained legislative support, and grew steadily. A move across the Bay to the small port town later named Berkeley gave it a spacious new campus that went through many changes until CSD was compelled to relocate tto Fremont in 1980—and the move turned out to be auspicious, benefiting both town and school. Our cover story traces CSDF’s rich history and its growth, and its reputation as one of the nation's most progressive schools for the deaf.
